I firmly believe that our patients will not be offended when I reveal that in the working slang of female doctors, the word “baba” serves as a terminus technicus: it generally refers to a gynecological patient. (I emphasize that regardless of her age, so a colleague’s statement, “You have a grandmother in the waiting room,” can easily mean that a 16-year-old high school student is seeking treatment.)

It also seems symbolic to me that – believe it or not – Baba is the name of a goddess from Sumerian-Akkadian mythology, the wife of the god Ninurta, who (the mother of seven daughters herself) was in charge of fertility! (see J. Black, A. Green: Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia. Prague 1999). In this context, it is interesting, by the way, that the god Baba (sometimes referred to as Babi) was in the pantheon Egyptian god of male fertility and is usually depicted with a baboon head and a permanent erection … (With the phenomenon of “baba-jaga” common, even if some of our sisters – very rarely – are not in a very good mood.)

So much for grandmas.

As for the CARE, for those unfamiliar with Shakespeare’s language, I add that it means “care.” Well, we want to be worldly, and that can’t do without English today.

The name is intended to indicate that we are caring for a woman. More precisely, our field is the so-called REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE, ie everything that concerns human reproduction. This is precisely the woman’s fundamental pillar. And because reproduction is probably the most basic attribute of life, we have the immodest impression that our field is also the most important of human activities, because
